Australia’s most expensive piece of legal tender has been launched by gold bullion producer and home to the world’s only government guaranteed investment and storage program, The Perth Mint.

With a combined weight of 2 kilograms, consisting of of 99.99 percent pure gold and encrusted with West Australian pink diamond from Lake Argyle, the coin is estimated to be worth approximately $2.48 million.

Dubbed “Discovery” the coin takes the shape of two separate concentric circles in homage to the “holey dollar”, introduced to Australia as the first official currency in 1814.

The exterior of the coin is etched with iconic Australian emblems, including the boab tree and kangaroos from the Kimberley region – home of the pink diamond – in addition to a 19th century prospector panning for gold.

A map of Australia is emblazoned into the heart of the coin.

Officiating the event, The Minister for Mines and Petroleum, the Honourable Bill Johnston MLA said The Perth Mint continues to highlight the wealth of natural resources found in Australia.

It gives me great pleasure to unveil an Australian coin which showcases our country’s prized treasures and the talents of our craftsmen and women who have transformed them to form a collectors’ item of such significance,” Mr Johnston said.

Issued as legal tender of Australia the obverse of each coin depicts Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination and the 2018 production date.

The Perth Mint continues to draw eyeballs to the Australian gold industry through its mesmerising coin and bullion production, as well as supporting high-profile investment in the reserve currency.

The Perth Mint has announced it will be the 2018 Gold Sponsor for the upcoming Precious Metals Investment Symposium in October, that will see CEO of The Perth Mint, Mr Richard Hayes deliver a speech at the event.

The Syposium will also see the likes of Eric Sprott, the one of the world’s leading investors in precious metals, grace Western Australia’s shores.
